Gleevec FAQ

It is apparent from many of the posts on this Web Site as well as messages to other CML discussion groups on the Web, that many Gleevec patients are being treated by Doctors who are not familiar with the proper procedures for using this drug. Gleevec is a new drug and there are only a few Doctors who have had experience with its proper use. Also, CML (Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia) is a relatively rare form of cancer which most Doctors have had very little experience in treating. These factors have lead to a concern in the medical community that some patients might be harmed by lack of proper management of their disease. Some of the concerns expressed by the experts are:

1. Dose management...Some patients are being prescribed either too low a dose which could contribute to the development of resistance to Gleevec or to high a dose which could result unacceptable toxicity.

2. Monitoring Blood Chemistries...Some patients are not having the necessary blood tests at the proper frequency to monitor the side effects of Gleevec.

3. Cytogenetic and Molecular Testing...Some patients are not being closely monitored with regular cytogenetic and molecular tests on their bone marrow which allow the Physician to access the stage of their disease and make treatment decisions.

Patients should seek Doctors who have had experience and training in the treatment of CML with Gleevec. Gleevec was approved for prescription sale in the United States on May 10, 2001, therefore the only Doctors who have appreciable experience are at the major cancer treatment centers which participated in the clinical trials of Gleevec. Patients should seek treatment from one of these centers. Patients who do not live near one of these centers may elect to have their routine visits for lab work done at their local Doctors office and fax the results to their primary Physician at the major cancer center. Generally, patients need to return to the primary treatment center only every 3 to 6 months so this should not be a problem for most patients.
Below, is a partial list of Doctors and contacts who have extensive experience in treating CML with Gleevec. This is not complete list. There are many qualified Doctors and institutions which do not appear here. This list is all I have at this time. I will add Doctors and institutions as the information becomes available to me.
